‘You gave him your address?’ Iris pursed her lips and shook her head in disapproval. ‘Shouldn’t have done that. Don’t think Joe would like it.’

‘Why not? I’m not trying to start a relationship with the man.’

‘Don’t be a goose. Didn’t mean that.’

‘What then? All I’m trying to do is find out whether someone with the right expertise could–’

‘That’s the point,’ Iris interrupted, ‘the right expertise. Someone like him, for example.’ Her expression was serious. ‘I don’t think you’ve been very bright, Mel.’

‘You’re saying … oh, good heavens!’ Melissa clapped a hand over her mouth. ‘He didn’t like Aidan; maybe he distrusted his motives towards his niece and her mother the way Joe and I did and decided to do something about it. If anyone could do it, he could.’

‘Exactly. Not like you to miss that.’

‘You’re right, especially as I knew beforehand that he wasn’t particularly well disposed towards Aidan Cresney. But what about Sarah? Surely, he couldn’t have had anything against her. She didn’t even know the Finns.’

‘She might not have known them by name, but she knew there was another woman in Aidan’s life and so did Caroline. And they recognised Rosalie, or thought they did. Remember that snatch of conversation you overheard?’

‘That’s true,’ Melissa admitted, ‘but it would hardly be a motive for murder.’

Iris shrugged. ‘Suppose not. Just a thought.’

Melissa fell silent, her brain working furiously.

‘Penny for ’em,’ said Iris after a few minutes.

‘I was just thinking, if Sarah was killed because she knew about the Finns and started putting two and two together, then the same would apply to Caroline. She could be in danger as well.’

‘That’s a bit far-fetched. No reason to suppose they know about Uncle Finn and his chemistry set.’

‘Just the same, it wouldn’t do any harm to–’

Iris slapped her forehead in an exaggerated gesture of dismay. ‘Why don’t I keep quiet?’ she lamented. ‘Now you’ll be even more determined to go on playing the detective. Look, Mel, why not drop it? It’s no concern of yours. You’ve already admitted it could be coincidence, two deaths in similar circs.’

‘I know, but that was before I met Doctor Finn. I’ll have to think about it.’ Melissa finished her drink of herbal tea and stood up. ‘I must go now. Shall I see you tomorrow? Joe won’t be home until the evening so we could go out somewhere if you like.’

‘There’s an exhibition of wild life paintings in the Cheltenham art gallery. French artist, neighbour of ours. I promised I’d try and get there.’

‘Then let’s do that. And how about a matinée at the Theatre Royal in Bath afterwards? They’re doing a season of Restoration comedies.’

‘Good idea!’

They arranged a time to set off in the morning and made their way to the front door. Just before she closed it behind Melissa, Iris said mischievously, ‘If you get an unexpected package, listen for buzzing before you open it.’

When she returned to Hawthorn Cottage Melissa checked the answering machine and found a brief message from Joe to say
